Tilde is a two year old Maine Coon/Tuxedo who was dumped in the lane leading to our house at the end of summer.   She had four tiny kittens of her own and at least two other older kittens were dumped with her.   The next morning very early, my husband called me and asked me to please come down to the lane because it was "covered in kittens."  When I got there and got out of the car, five little kittens came running down the lane toward me and following behind them was a very thin, very frightened mama cat, trying to do her best with the kittens.  One of the older kittens had already been run over by somebody by the time we found them.  I ran around picking up kittens and then called Tilde to me.   She came right up, I was able to pick her up and get everybody back to the house and safe.   Tilde was very young, obviously not yet a year old and although she did her job, it was obvious she did not enjoy being a mama.   Just as soon as she was sure that the kittens were being cared for, she weaned them.   It took her a long time to recover from being abandoned and for several months, she actively disliked (and made it well known) any of the male cats who got close to her.    She spent a long time staying by herself in my kitty isolation room but gradually over time, she decided it might be safe to come come out of the room and interact with everybody.   Tilde is very friendly to people and she has gotten used to the dogs but she is still very easily intimidated and probably will want to hide for a few days when she goes to a new home.   We think she may have some Maine Coon mixed in.  She has the ear tufts typical of that breed and she is more heavily built than a typical "alley kitty."    She obviously had been somebody's pet and we still do not understand how people can pretend to love an animal and then just throw them in a country lane where they will either be run over or taken by hawks. Tilde is very loving and very grateful. She would love to have a forever home of her own!
