I spotted Igor while leaving a not so great neighborhood that I was driving though. To give you an idea of the area I was there to see a pitbull that had been in a fight with two other stray pitbulls and needed some help. After that situation was made a little better for the poor pitbull and the owner I was on my way home when I spotted a little black shape darting across the street. I held my breath as I approached the little shape and saw a women crossing the street and thought whewwww thats the owner...or so I thought.
I pulled over and got out and asked the women if she needed help catching her dog. The woman replied, "What dog? THAT dog? That thing isnt mine!". Wearily I walked over to the women who had now gathered next to another woman to gawk at me and ask what I wanted. I asked them about the little black dog that was running back and forth across the street and had now stopped to watch me from underneath a car. The women informed me he indeed HAD a home and pointed to a house with a For Sale sign on it and said he used to live there they moved two weeks ago so if you want it take it. My heart dropped as I saw those big round marble looking eyes peeking out at me. I asked if anyone had been feeding him and they said yeah we tried to set food out one block over so he would leave our block but he keeps coming back here. After I managed to wipe the horrified look off my face I went to my trunk and pulled out a handful of doggy food (I keep a bag in my car for just this reason) and threw a couple of kibbles at him. He sniffed and came out from his hiding spot and sat a couple feet away from me. I got down on my knees and threw a couple more kibbles closer this time and in the middle of a leash that was a fashioned into a lasso. It took a couple of tries but eventually I got him. Once I had a leash around him I asked the women if they knew anything else about him and they both said no but to please take him as there were already enough strays around so thats just what I did.
He jumped right into my car and into my passengers arms then decided he would nuzzle up to me as I was driving. He sat there for the 20 min drive home and fell asleep with his head on my shoulder. It was a couple of days before Halloween and Igor has a very unique face and hair...so we stuck with a Halloween themed name and dubbed him Igor...Iggy for short.
Iggy has been living with me for the past month and has come out of his shell quite a bit but still has a long way to go. He still has moments in which he freezes and cowers as I bend down to pick him up but it will just take more time for him to build his trust.
Iggy shares his foster home with another foster brother who is a 20 lb puppy and just annoys him to no end. He also has a resident foster brother that is a giant compared to him and while the first couple of introductions Iggy was terrified they now lounge in the living room together and even run laps around the yard or the living room together.
Iggy can be a bit temperamental about his bones and raw hides so he needs to be monitored around other dogs to avoid a fight. He spends the day in an xpen behind a closed door with his doggy bed, food, water, and a puppy pad as he occasionally has an accident during the day. He barks on occasion when he needs to go potty. He loves dogs that are his size and will run back and forth with the biggest smile on his face. He was introduced to a lady mini schnauzer and it was love at first site. Unfortunately the schnauzers parents didnt feel the same way so Iggy is still looking for his soul mate. Iggy has a lot of energy and while he loves to be perched on your shoulder on the couch he would thrive in a home with a companion who he can run and play with.
Iggy doesnt do very well with sit BUT he can dance like no other dog I have ever seen! He gets very excited when I get home and jumps around on his two hind legs like a little kangaroo. He will need some training and patience to adapt to a new family but he is very affectionate and loving once he knows you wont hurt him.
